Outlying is a metal band from the Bécancour area in Québec, Canada. While mainly influenced by old thrash bands, European black and death metal bands, as well as some more contemporary American metal bands, the guys in Outlying will actually be influenced by anything they like, whatever it is. Their music blends multiple elements, like heaviness, intensity, contrasts, melody and catchiness. They like to keep an open-minded and uncompromised attitude about their music.

In 2003, while they were studying in local high school, childhood friends Fred A. Dubeau and Guy Provencher decided to start a band together and soon teamed up with bassist Deven Lavigne. They started to jam at one of the school's music room, and covered some songs by various metal, punk and alternative rock bands. After a couple of months, the guys were getting along very well and decided they also wanted to write their own material. They called the band "The Curse Of Angels", and began playing their stuff at some shows for a couple of friends.

Afterwards, the guys continued to jam together occasionally, but they did not really know what kind of music they wanted to play, and they needed money to buy better equipment. They also became very busy with their respective studies, jobs and projects. In 2006, the three members decided it was time to get the engine rolling once again, and started to invest themselves a lot more in the project. They switched their band name to "The Cursed", then "Outlying". This final name refers mainly to the small towns where the guys from Outlying come from. Then, they started scheduling steady rehearsal sessions, and writing more and more material.

In 2008, Deven and Guy left the band. They were replaced by Chris Gauthier on bass, and a session member named Steve DeCotret (Strigampire, Hopeless Nation) on the drums. Their first EP, "Within The Jail Of The Unfortunate", was released at the end of year 2008.
